| | Repost: Do Not Call Me Underdog!
In 2008...
India with millions of supporter were considered underdogs with a new captain heading bunch a young guns. Millions of hearts wished that India would bring home the award, yet they had this doubt in mind. The team was young and they were missing Ganguly, Dravid and the rest of the senior players. It was a bunch of young lads trying to prove their point. There was turbanator, there was Mr hair Dhoni, there was tall Sharma, there was this and that, and all were young, well! at least most of them were.
By the end of that T20 world cup, India was holding the first T20 world cup title after beating the equally credit deserving Pakis.
One year later...In 2009...
Beginning of second T20 World Cup...
Pakis, the underdogs, were kicked, bullied and thrown out of "trashcan," and even I! (Mr Bookie!) did not fail to point out the captain's comments after their loss.
Fast forward couple of games, ... And now we stand around finals with Pakis and ... into finals. I cannot be sure whether Pak will win against... in finals but they have definitely made a statement. Along with their surprising up-rise, now the cricketing world have known that there are NO such thing as underdogs in cricket. This statement became evident as no one was expecting minnows to beat England and others, but they did. So, expecting or saying one country will win, does not have any worth anymore. No one can predict what will happen in this game; no one.
One thing though is that Pakis are very very consistently inconsistent in their game during the early stages of the tournament. While in latter stages they regularly produce more consistency then India or any other team today. While Pak stands out against other countries, there are these other countries that are still trying to find their space between Aussies, India and Srilanka (the TOP dawgs!); like Bangladesh, Netherlands and Ireland.
South Africa is still that cursed team, New Zealand is trying to find its winning combination, and West Indies is waiting for Gayle to fire. As for India, they have managed to fail one more time, and now they will have to listen to media barrage of allegations and regular political bullshit (ahum...excuse my French!)
No matter which batsman has shoulder injuries, which captain complains of chucking or which umpire has this weird signals: one thing has become evident that there are no underdogs in cricket, or at least in game coined as T20. So, I am a cricket team, and please from here on, "DO NOT CALL ME UNDERDOG!"
