Sensational win for Netherlands!!
After a thunderstorm opening ceremony of the 2nd ICC World Twenty20 World Cup all eyes were set for the inaugural match between the England and the Netherlands on June 5, 2009 at Lord’s, London. It was a big day for the Dutch as the Netherlands have made a history in the world of Twenty20 by defeating the England by 4 wickets.
Nobody had ever thought of Netherlands winning against the England as the British army was more likely to reap out the home ground advantage but on the other hand the Dutch had to make this win if they wanted to step ahead towards the next ICC World Cup 2011. Netherlands won the toss and chose to field. Following the target of 163 runs from 20 overs, Tom de Grooth played the innings of his life leading Netherlands to a sensational win over England. He scored 49 runs off 38 balls and was awarded with the “Player of the Match”. When rain began to fall, Netherlands so smartly accelerated their chase of 163 making sure that they would always be ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis.
Just a run short off from his half century, Tom de Grooth lost his wicket on a classic delivery of Collingwood. Then it was Ryan ten Doeschate and Edgar Schiferli who were playing the biggest match of their lives ever stood up for the famous win of Netherlands. What’s more, just 7 runs required off the last over and 2 needed off the final delivery Stuart Broad missed a chance for a run-out resulting in an overthrow creating scenes of joy and celebrations everywhere!!
